Dory is an "annoying" little sister with a big imagination.  She drives her whole family so crazy that they call her Rascal.  Fun book with a lot of illustrations.  Great beginning chapter book.

Another FABULOUS historical fiction!  Set in the depression, it gives a real look at what it might have been like as an African American family trying to survive during that time.  I HIGHLY recommend this one!

I LOVED this book!!  It's one of the best books about bullying I've ever read.  It is about a boy who used to be a bully but he gets amnesia and he sees his old life with new eyes.  It gives us a new look at bullies from the inside out.  It also gives the perspective of the victims.

OMG!!!! This book is a FABULOUS work of historical fiction!  Follow 3 families from different locations and points in history as they struggle to find a safe place in a time of turmoil.
JOSEF is a Jewish boy living in 1930s Nazi Germany. With the threat of concentration camps looming, he and his family board a ship bound for the other side of the world . . .
ISABEL is a Cuban girl in 1994. With riots and unrest plaguing her country, she and her family set out on a raft, hoping to find safety in America . . .
MAHMOUD is a Syrian boy in 2015. With his homeland torn apart by violence and destruction, he and his family begin a long trek toward Europe . . .
All three kids go on harrowing journeys in search of refuge. All will face unimaginable dangers -- from drownings to bombings to betrayals. But there is always the hope of tomorrow. And although Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud are separated by continents and decades, shocking connections will tie their stories together in the end.

I had a couple of busy weeks so this one took a bit longer to finish, but not because it wasn't good.
Twelve-year-old Crow has lived her entire life on a tiny, isolated piece of the starkly beautiful Elizabeth Islands in Massachusetts. Abandoned and set adrift in a small boat when she was just hours old, Crow’s only companions are Osh, the man who rescued and raised her, and Miss Maggie, their fierce and affectionate neighbor across the sandbar.

Crow has always been curious about the world around her, but it isn’t until the night a mysterious fire appears across the water that the unspoken question of her own history forms in her heart. Soon, an unstoppable chain of events is triggered, leading Crow down a path of discovery and danger.

Another good book by Kate DiCamillo.  When Louisiana Elefante’s granny wakes her up in the middle of the night to tell her that the day of reckoning has arrived and they have to leave home immediately, Louisiana isn’t overly worried. After all, Granny has many middle-of-the-night ideas. But this time, things are different. This time, Granny intends for them never to return. Separated from her best friends, Raymie and Beverly, Louisiana struggles to oppose the winds of fate (and Granny) and find a way home. But as Louisiana’s life becomes entwined with the lives of the people of a small Georgia town — including a surly motel owner, a walrus-like minister, and a mysterious boy with a crow on his shoulder — she starts to worry that she is destined only for good-byes. (Which could be due to the curse on Louisiana's and Granny’s heads. But that is a story for another time.)

Imagine that you are cursed to be a loser.  No matter what you do you can never win ANYTHING.  What would you be willing to do to change things?  This was a good book with magic, crazy family members, determination and two kids who learn a lot about what really makes you who you are.

I had promised myself that I wouldn't read more than one book in a series this summer so I could try as many different books as possible, but I just couldn't wait any longer to see what happened to Ada.  It was totally worth it.  I LOVE both of these books!  I can't recommend it enough.

This book is a great blend of humor, adventure, mystery and science.  3 foster siblings (2 of them geniuses) are recruited by an eccentric genius to help him with his experiments and inventions. Jack is no genius, but, boy, does he have some smarts.  When they go with their new boss to Antarctica to judge a competition they discover that a scientist is missing.  Jack's persistence leads them all to their biggest discovery yet.

This was a good book.  Not quite as good as the others that I've read so far this summer.  It took me a little while to get into it and I'm not sure how I feel about the ending.
Three middle schoolers are brought together at Moon Shadow, an isolated campground where thousands have gathered to catch a glimpse of a rare and extraordinary total eclipse of the sun.

Ally's parents own Moon Shadow, where she's lived pretty much her entire life. When her parents tell her they're moving away to the city, she's suddenly frightened and desperately wants to stay at the only home she's ever known.

Bree is popular and gorgeous, but with scientist parents and a brainiac little sister, she is the black sheep of the family. When her parents break it to her that they're moving to Moon Shadow, Bree realizes that popularity doesn't mean a thing when there's no one there to see it.

Overweight and awkward, Jack is confused when his science teacher asks him to go on a trip to view the eclipse at Moon Shadow, especially since he failed science class. Although this is a chance for Jack to bypass summer school, it also gives him the courage to come out of his shell and find true friends for the first time.

The was my daughter's favorite book from the past year.  I decided to read it and I'm so glad that I did!  It is a wonderful example of Historical Fiction, set during WWII.  A girl's whole life is changed when the children of London are encouraged to evacuate to the country, where they will be safe from bombs.  Ada is lead to a new home and a totally new outlook on life AND herself.

Another good one.  This is an unusual story of a Robot who is stranded on a wild island inhabited only by animals.  The Robot is programmed to adapt to insure survival.  This leads to some very interesting situations for a robot.  I highly recommend.

I am so glad that we have this book in our library!  I really enjoyed it.  I couldn't put it down.  If you like magic and adventure you should give this a try.  A girl who never really fit into her family or her life finds out that she is really an elf that has strong magic and an important purpose.

This is another book that I had heard so much talk about but hadn't had the chance to read yet.  Now I know what all the fuss was about.  I read this one in record time.  It was so good that I'm fighting the temptation to read the whole series.  So many books, so little time.  I'm sure I'll come back to it soon.  I have to sample a few other books before I find out what happens next for this boy who is the son of a Greek God.

Another great read.  I felt bad that so many students had read this one when I hadn't.  It is one of the rare cases where I believe the movie came very close to being as good as the book.  It was such a touching and uplifting story of accepting not only other, but also, yourself.

I really enjoyed reading this book.  It is a mix between historical fiction and fantasy with a bit of the supernatural mixed in.  Serafina is a very unusual girl that finds herself pushed into the roll of a hero when she witnesses something very horrible and disturbing.
